Ushers greet attendees with a cleansing ritual as they enter Apparition, followed by overlapping environments of light, sound, and performance. Sprey: A Narrow Vehicle dramatizes this moment of entry using wind, moisture, leaves, and smoke, conveying the audience to roaming musical performances by special guest performers. Just beyond that, Dial, a sculptural projection screen, features live video projections and a 24-hour soundtrack.
Emanations in the back room offers a sacred-object gift shop staffed by a silent usher who refuses to sell. Using a photo-booth audience members can have their faces uploaded into a projected onto a deity.
Apparition began when EMPAC commissioned the entry piece Sprey: A Narrow Vehicle in 2011. The piece was then expounded upon through the pieces Dial, and apparition when Trouble was invited by the Invisible Dog Gallery in Brooklyn to present a weekend of performance installation in 2013. Apparition was also presented at the Museum of Transitory Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2014.
